Guatemala Project funded by local doctor - Dr. Ellen Coburn
Vancouver 's Dr. Ellen Coburn has made five trips to Guatemala to the Mayan village of Huixoc to open a clinic and provide medical services. During her first trip in 2002, she realized that medical care alone was not enough to help this remote mountain region escape an ongoing cycle of poverty, poor health and unemployment. With support of many in the Vancouver community, Dr. Coburn has seen the dream of developing a new high school for the village move steadily towards reality. For the first year the junior high opened, Huixoc had 30 eager students enrolled in the Grade 7 class.
